Faculty Positions

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (India), invites applications from exceptionally bright and motivated candidates, with an established record of independent, high quality research, and commitment to teaching, for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor and higher levels in the broad areas of Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Water Resources Engineering. The prospective candidates must have a Ph.D. in one of these areas.

For Assistant Professor’s position, the age of candidate should preferably be below 35 years, and the candidate should have about 3 years of post-doctoral research experience. The requirement of research experience is relaxable in exceptional cases. For Associate Professor’s and Professor’s positions, the prospective candidates are expected to have made outstanding contributions in the chosen area of research and also guided doctoral students.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is a premier Institute of international repute for higher education and research. The institute currently has nearly 450 faculty members in more than 40 departments/centres pursuing research in a wide range of areas in science and engineering. The institute offers excellent infrastructural facilities and a very conducive atmosphere for carrying out high quality research. The institute provides ample opportunities for the academic growth of faculty members, in terms of start-up research grant to a new faculty member, financial support to meet the expenses for participating in national and international conferences, membership fee of professional bodies, and contingent expenses towards purchase of books, stationery, consumables, personal subscription to journals, page charges for publication in journals and local travel. In addition, fringe benefits, such as support to cover relocation expenses for the new faculty, leave travel concession, medical reimbursement, education allowance for children of faculty and reimbursement of telephone and internet bills are permitted as per the Institute norms. On-campus accommodation is also provided and most faculty members stay on campus.

Over the past six decades, the department has made significant contributions to research and graduate training in several important areas of Civil Engineering. The department is recognized as a Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) by the University Grants Commission of India, a Center of Excellence in Water Resources by the Central Board for Irrigation and Power, and has been recognized by the Department of Science and Technology with funds under the FIST program. An Indo-French Water Cell has been functioning in the department under an MoU with the French Government for the last ten years.

The department offers research programs leading to PhD and MTech (Research) degrees, and graduate course programs leading to MTech in Civil Engineering with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Water Resources & Environmental Engineering and MTech degree in Transportation & Infrastructure Engineering. The department currently has 25 faculty members. The normal teaching commitment of a faculty member is around 3 hours per week over eight months in a year. Approximately 100 research students pursue their degrees in the department, at any time. Research and course students receive financial support from the Institute. A significant amount of research funding is generated by the faculty from external funding agencies.
